My classmates showed off with grand pronouncements and technical terms like ‘chiaroscuro’ and ‘depth-of-field,’and they defended Duvall against his critics with a passion that would have been inspiring if it weren’t so obviously meant to impress him.  Alex moderated, drank, and herded his charges to show that he could.  

Matt Duvall drank Scotch—of course he did—and leaned languidly against the dark leather seat, soaking in the adulation, sneering at the thought that these twenty-something art novices could say anything of importance.

I sipped my beer, saying nothing. This was not a frivolous occasion for me. While I’d gushed spontaneously back in the classroom, I was past that now, intoxicated by my idol’s presence and too conscious of my own insignificance to try to show off.
