Author Interview: Mallory Path
We at Paper Bag Press are proud to have Mallory Path among our authors. Her writing is easy on the eyes, rich with description, and the settings are realistic. All of this combines to make her stories full of erotic impact. Read below to learn a little more about Mallory:
Why you enjoy writing erotica. Do you also enjoy reading it?
I like the exploration of characters that erotica affords: how they relate to each other physically and emotionally, how they discover things about their relationship and each other, and even themselves. I definitely enjoy reading as much as I write.
What other kinds of writing do you practice?
Most of my writing is about love in different forms (friendship, romance, sexual) between men, so the stories I've done for Paper Bag Press, both of which involve two men and a woman, are a bit of a departure for me. I'd really like to get into speculative fiction, and have a yearning to write steampunk.
(Amy's aside: I'd love to publish some steampunk stories! Comment below if you would like them, too.)
What do you like or dislike about eBooks?
There's a lot to like about eBooks: the lower impact on the environment (http://www.gogreenreade.com/ has some great information on this aspect of eBooks), the immediacy of the purchase without having to go hunting from store to store, the lower cost for readers, and the economy of storage space are a few of the reasons that attract me. I do love the solidity of a paper book in my hands and definitely get a thrill out of seeing myself in conventional print, but overall I'm pro-eBooks.
Who is your favorite character that you've written?
While I have an affection for all the characters I've written (which is probably true for most writers), I'd say that my favorite of the characters who appear at Paper Bag Press is Tommy in "A Radiance of Colors on the Horizon." He's definitely not stupid, but he knows the other two are quicker than he is. Still, he doesn't let that get him down as he fumbles towards understanding; his heart carries him where his head might fail.
Going beyond Paper Bag, I'm very fond of the rentboys in "Whatever Gets You Through the Night," the microfic series I've been posting at my Livejournal. I'm slightly in love with Mick, one of the main characters in a story called "Handle With Care"--the whole point of that story is that you can't judge a person by his appearance, but I have to say that with each rewrite, nuances came out about Mick and he surprised even me with some of his thoughts on things. If I could meet one of my characters, it would probably be him. (Of course, it could be because that's the story I've most recently finished--but I do like Mick a lot!)
What are your thoughts about publishing?
I'm still new to the publishing game. I've had stories published in online literary magazines, but that feels like another country, if not another planet, compared with commercial publishing.
Can you tell us a bit about your life--your favorite leisure activities, perhaps?
I'm a huge fan of naps. Seriously, naps are underrated as an activity for adults. I used to be a traveler and I'd love to get back to that once I have the means again--Japan and a return visit to New Zealand are at the top of my list. And of course there are the old stand-bys: writing, reading, going to movies, hanging out with friends, and cuddling with my hamsters.
